Description

A narrative and field note account of just before and after a Florida alligator has a Bald eagle in its jaws and the incredible true story surrounding its escape, struggle to get back to the nest, and his mate taking over outside duties to not only help him back to health but raise their eaglet to fledge. This well-documented event began on January 10, 2020. For those who desire greater detail and want to pour over the field notes and interviews, these have been provided. In August 2019, our mated pair returned to their central Florida nest, LA015, to begin the mating process. It started like any other year. Chuck Colley, the volunteer for the EagleWatch program, directed by Shawnlei Breeding of the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey facility in Maitland, FL, began his field notes for LA015. They are condensed from August until full transcription a few days before the attack on January 10, 2020. There are many photos of the injured eagle. Also, those interviewed who provided one, an aerial view of the pond with old golf holes and wetland area with nest. Numbers are added to aerial photo used in both the field notes and narrative story for visualization. Also provided are eagle and alligator photos separate from this story. Speaking with Louise Anderson (vigilant neighbor who distracted the alligator), Chuck Colley and Sherry Epperly Chester (EagleWatch nest volunteers), all agreeing to sit for an interview within the COVID pandemic, between January and March 2022, precautions were followed and outside sit-downs took place with the backdrop, nest LA015, and our pair bonded working on another clutch. Cold, rainy, and windy, the forecast each weekend kept us from meeting for a few months, even in Florida. A 70-degree day with mild wind and some sun to sit outside finally arrived. Shawnlei Breeding (EagleWatch Program Director with the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey Rehabilitation Facility in Maitland, Florida) was interviewed via online video. The book is a micro and macro of this incredible event and history of our national symbol.
